Strawberry Basil Rum Smash
I never really knew why they called certain drinks a “smash” until I made this. I smashed or muddled the strawberries and basil leaves on the bottom and then added the basil simple syrup, lemon juice and rum! The result is one tasty Strawberry Basil Rum Smash! To be honest, I’m not really sure if that is why they call it a smash, but it sounds really good, right?

Once I added the other ingredients, the fruit filled bottom floated to the top. I added a sliced strawberry to the mix and another fresh basil leaf. As a garnish, I slid a whole strawberry that wasn’t hulled to the rim of the glass. This really added a touch of summer to the whole drink, if I do say so myself. I’m thrilled that summer is upon us and strawberry season is full swing in some areas of the world. The north east still has some catching up to do but we are almost there!
For this recipe I used the basic simple syrup recipe found in this rosemary infused simple syrup post. If you use that recipe, replace the rosemary with basil leaves. You will have some simple syrup left over so feel free to make extra drinks or store in a mason jar for later!

1 cup unrefined sugar
1 cup water
1/2 cup basil leaves
8 basil leaves
1/2 cup simple syrup
juice of 1 lemon
4 oz or 1 jigger of rum
In a medium saucepan, combine the sugar and water. Heat on medium heat until sugar is dissolved. Add the basil leaves and let steep for 5-10 minutes.
Strain simple syrup into a bowl and remove basil leaves and disgard.
Slice and add 4 berries to each glass with 4 basil leaves. Muddle the berries and basil together using a muddler.
Add the lemon juice, simple syrup and rum to a cocktail shaker and shake 4-5 times until combined. Pour into glasses over ice and serve. Add another sliced strawberry to the drink and a whole strawberry to the rim of the glass as a garnish.
Rosemary Infused Simple Syrup – This recipe is so tasty. I love the fresh rosemary in it! This is basically the exact recipe used in the above drink, just with basil in place of the rosemary. Feel free to use any other herb or maybe in flowers! Violet simple syrup sounds kind of great! Use mint, basil, rosemary, or sage!
Blood Orange Rosemary Cocktail – This drink was da bomb. I’d seriously suggest paring the rosemary simple syrup with blood oranges and it is so pretty in pink!
Basil and Bourbon Pomegranate Cocktail – This drink is a real winner. Perfectly paired with my favorite lady, bourbon. You wouldn’t think bourbon is a lady but in my head, she is.
Red Cherry Sangria – The perfect summer drink, a classic sangria recipe with a twist of real cherry flavor.
