Blueberry Recipes and Facts

A Guide to Blueberries:

Blueberries have a range of blue colors but you’ll know when they are perfectly ripe based on the darker blue hue. I love blueberry season and I always make sure to go blueberry picking at least once during the summer. Last year I dropped the entire basket of blueberries because an ant was crawling on my hand. Oops. Blueberry picking is really hard work because they are so small!

Selection: When selecting berries on the bush, make sure you are picking the ripest and darker berries. In the store, I always turn the carton over to make sure no berries have burst open or are mushed into the packaging.

Storage: When you get home, do not wash the berries right away. This will lead to faster mold growth. Instead, wash them as you need them. If you add them to your morning oatmeal, only wash a handful each day.

Freeze: When freezing berries, wash and dry them and spread the berries along a baking sheet. Put the entire baking sheet into the freezer for about 30 minutes. After they initially freeze, place in a plastic bag and put back into the freezer for future use.

Blueberries are best in the summer months, generally May – August depending on where you live in the U.S.

Blueberries are super food powerhouses loaded with phytonutrients and antioxidents that help rid the body of free radicals (bad things!) and protect against certain diseases, like cancer.

Blueberries also protect against short term memory loss. I know that I need all the help I can get to remember things.
