I struggle every single day to make healthy choices in life. If I’m faced with the decision between carrot cake and an actual carrot, all bets are off. Despite this struggle, I know that everyday I can take small steps towards my wellness goals. Last summer I lost 25lbs due to cutting out soda, eating a more balanced diet and getting some more movement into my daily routine by rafting, swimming and hiking. It’s really hard for me to stay motivated and once I found out about the Walgreens Balance Rewards program and how it gives customers #BalanceRewards Points for making everyday purchased AND  for living a healthier lifestyle and tracking daily activities such as: exercise, blood pressure and blood glucose readings and weight I knew that this kind of motivation and goal tracking would make meeting my health goals so much easier! Not only does this program help you lose weight, but it encourages you to maintain it as well!

Over the winter, I gained at least 10lbs back so reality has hit me hard and I’ve renewed my goals. I’ve begun to nourish my body properly again and treat it with more respect. The Walgreens Balance Rewards program has helped keep my motivation level high.

When I stopped into my local Walgreens I picked up coconut water and bottled water to stay hydrated, acidphilious probiotics that I take all the time to help with my acid reflux and mixed nuts that I made nut butter with. Below you will find the Mixed Nut Butter Recipe so you can make your own nut butter. I used a mix of unsalted peanuts, cashews, pecans, walnuts and almonds. The bag was mostly peanuts but it was a nice variety.

Just like any rewards program, the Balance Rewards program gives you points on purchases and when you reach a certain threshold, you get a monetary reward. Such as 5 dollars for 5,000 Balance Rewards Points. The difference between the Walgreens Balance Rewards program and any other similar rewards program is that this will actually give you points for participating in an activity that is good for your overall health and wellness. Once you reach the 5,000 threshold you can use the 5 dollars on things that will make your life happier and healthier, just like Walgreens slogan: At the corner of happy and healthy. I don’t know about you but I love those Walgreens commercials. The voice of John Corbett (Aidan from Sex in the City!) is pretty sexy, don’t you think?

I downloaded the app and immediately connected a device, MyFitnessPal. I use MyFitnessPal everyday to see how many calories I burned on my morning bike ride or late afternoon swim. I also track my water intake which sometimes is hard to do because I drink so much of it! Finally, I track my food which helps me stay within my calorie range for the day.

Now every morning I log my weight into the Walgreens app and immediately get another 20 Balance Rewards Points. I also have a blood pressure machine so I was logging that as well and syncing my work outs. In the course of a few days, I earned 1,050 Balance Rewards points so I imagine it wouldn’t be too hard to get up to 5,000 points and buy myself a bag of mixed nuts or some coconut water to stay hydrated. You can view the various ways to earn points for wellness and healthy choices on the Walgreens website. I got 250 points just for setting a weight loss goal and another 250 for connecting a device!

Once you log onto the app you can immediately see the icon for healthy choices. It is easy to navigate the different areas for tracking everyday healthy choices and Walgreens has everything you need to get started. As you can see  there is an entire section dedicated to blood glucose and blood pressure monitors. Here you will also find fitness trackers such as iHealth and FitBit. If you do have a fitness tracker of some kind you can easily sync that device.

Mixed Nut Butter Recipe & Ants on a Log!

I bought these mixed nuts bags and I got even more rewards points! When I got home I put the nuts into the food processor and let it do all the work. It turned my nuts into a creamy mixed nut butter! I smeared this over celery sticks and added raisins. I also tend to pile the butter on apples and I find myself with a healthy and satisfying snack!

I think I earned about 100 points for a 20 dollar purchase of nuts, coconut water and probiotics. Just so I can buy more nuts and make more homemade peanut butter. Thanks to #BalanceRewards and #CollectiveBias I’m on my way to losing the 10lbs I gained over the winter.

Mixed Nut Butter Recipe

Mixed Nut Butter

This nut butter is made with quite a few different nuts. I used a bag of pecans, almonds, peanuts, walnuts and cashews!

Yield: 1 large mason jar

Prep Time: 10 min

Cook Time: 00 min

Total Time: 10 min

Ingredients:

2 16 oz bags of mixed nuts
(pecans, walnuts, cashews, almonds and peanuts)

Directions:

Add the mixed nuts to a food processor and process for 2 minutes.

After 2 minutes, if needed, scrape down the sides of the food processor bowl with a spatula and continue to process until the mixture if creamy.  This can take anywhere from 5-10 minutes.

Once creamy, use a spatula to scoop the nut butter into an airtight container, such as a mason jar with a lid. Store in the pantry for 1 - 2 months.

Notes:

Some people like to soak nuts before using them in recipes or eating them raw.

If you wish to soak the nuts before using them in this recipe, soak the pistachios and walnuts overnight in a large bowl of water and cover with a dish towel. You will need enough water to cover them, generally 2 times the amount of nuts.

After soaking, preheat your oven to a low degree, such as 100 degrees F and arrange nuts on a baking sheet. Bake to dehydrate the nuts until dry (About 10-12 hours). You can also use a dehydrator for this process.

      I love them too! There is this mega walgreens in Boston that has everything you would ever need. But locally one popped up and I didn’t realize it was there for so long!

    I struggle with weight all the time. The key for me is to not to beat myself up when I derail. And when I say derail I really mean a cheat day that’s turned into a cheat week. I just let it go and start again. Congratulations on your weight loss and this mixed nut butter looks delicious!
