Red Velvet Hot Chocolate
Mistakes. They happen to the best of us. When I first attempted this Red Velvet Hot Chocolate, I let the milk get too hot and it curdled. Gross right? I know this isn’t the sexiest thing to talk about this close to Valentine’s Day but I’m keeping it real, Ya’ll!
If you do make this for Valentine’s Day to drink with your honey just be aware that if you don’t just “scald” the milk and gently whisk in the chocolate it will curdle and be totally gross. So here I am, warning you: Don’t be like me and forget you have milk above a low flame and everything will be A- OK!
I was also trying to be super authentic and added 1/2 cup of buttermilk to this instead of just 2 ½ cups of milk like I always do when I make hot chocolate. Apparently, buttermilk has a lower fat content than whole milk. I would have never thought that to be true in a million years. Since a lower fat milk would curdle faster, the second time I made this I skipped the authentic buttermilk and used whole milk. No curdles this time around! Hooray! Red Velvet Hot Chocolate for all!
While making this recipe, you can decide how much red food coloring to use. To make it as dark as the photo, you will need quite a bit of food coloring. Make sure you have all of your ingredients handy as you do not want to walk away from the milk and let it boil. Curdled milk is gross!
Prep Time: 05 min
Cook Time: 10 min
Total Time: 15 min
2 1/2 cups whole milk
1/3 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
red food coloring
homemade whipped cream
In a medium sauce pot, heat milk on low and scald. Do not let boil or the milk will curdle. Once milk is heated, add the semi-sweet chocolate chips and stir until melted.
Remove from heat and mix in the red food coloring until you are happy with the color. Pour into a large measuring cup with a spout for easier pouring or individual cups ready for serving.
Top with whipped cream and enjoy!
Peanut Butter Hot Chocolate – There is no truer combo than peanut butter and chocolate. Sorry, jelly, move aside. This duo is perfect to symbolize the love you and your dude (or lady) have.
Spicy Chipotle Hot Chocolate – This hot cocoa could also be very fitting for Valentine’s day and a great way to spice things up, if you catch my drift!
